Helma Sawatzky is an artist, graphic designer and musician who lives in Surrey BC, Canada. In 1991, she completed a Bachelor of Music degree in her country of birth, the Netherlands. In May 2009, Sawatzky completed a BFA in Photography at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver BC. She is currently pursuing graduate studies at the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby BC Canada.

In her years as a singer-songwriter and performing artist, Sawatzky recorded three albums. Her current creative focus is in the visual arts. She works in photography, painting, mixed media sculpture and performance. Her work explores notions of the ‘virtual’ and the ‘real’ as they play out in everyday life, as well as ideas around the various presences and impacts of consumer culture on the environment.
